The short version

What we keep, and why

WhatWhenWhy
Your vision, light, week (hours and money), starting point, routes, experiments, steps, notes, reviews, decisions, memory, saved picksOnly with an accountSo your plan syncs across devices and comes back on a new phone
Your email address, and an account id from Apple or Google if you sign in with themWhen you create an accountTo sign you in (a 6-digit code by email, Sign in with Apple or Sign in with Google) and for the emails below. With Apple's "Hide My Email", we only ever see Apple's relay address
Your subscription statusIf you subscribe to PlusTo know which features are open
How many AI requests you made today, and their sizeWhen the AI is usedTo keep a daily limit and our costs in check
Your phone's notification address and time zoneIf you allow notifications and have a buddyTo deliver a buddy's note at a sensible hour
Buddy notes, and any note you reportIf you use buddiesTo show the notes to the two of you, and to review a report
A mentor link and the snapshot it showsIf you create oneTo show it to whoever has the link, until it ends
Your email address, if you join the beta on our websiteOnly if you sign up thereTo invite you to the beta

Apple and Google may also send your name and profile photo when you sign in with them. We never keep them: our database removes them before anything is stored.

Everything you write stays private to you: our database lets each person read and change only their own rows (row-level security on every table).

AI

When you ask for it, the text needed for that one request is sent to Anthropic's Claude through our server: your vision text (to read it back), a step's title and description and, for a review, what you wrote about your work (step help), your own route idea with your weekly hours and money (your own route), one experiment's steps (with how each one felt), notes, review answers and your if-then plan (weekly changes), the conversation you are practising (rehearsal), and your vision, its main points, your route's name, the titles of the steps you did and your light's name (a letter from your future self; never your notes). With Plus, a few short notes from earlier chapters are included so suggestions build on what you found. Letters from your future self are kept only on your phone and are never uploaded to our database. Anthropic processes this text only to answer the request; under its commercial terms it may not use it to train models, and it deletes it within 30 days (or keeps it up to 2 years only if its safety systems flag a request as breaking its usage policy). Anthropic processes these requests only in the United States.

Letter voices

If you choose one of the natural voices to read your letters, the letter's sentences are sent once, through our server, to Google Cloud Text-to-Speech to make the audio, and the audio comes back to your phone, where it is kept with the letter. Google processes it only to make the audio, does not log the text or the audio, and under its Cloud terms does not use it to train its models. Nothing is stored on our server. If you choose your phone's own voice, the letter is read on your phone and nothing is sent. The voice samples you can play come from our website, daytoward.com.

Sharing you choose

Emails

With an account we may send four emails: a welcome, a short recap after your first week, a recap after each chapter, and a reminder 3 days before a Plus trial is charged. You can turn the first three off in Settings, Reminders. We send them through Resend.

Analytics

Off by default. If you turn them on (Settings, Privacy), we count a few moments (for example that a step was done) with a random id made on your phone, and crash types with the message cut down so nothing personal is included. Never anything you wrote, your email or your vision. Turning it off forgets the random id. We use PostHog.

Crash reports

On by default, so we can fix problems quickly. When the app breaks, it sends technical details to Sentry: the error and where in the app's code it happened, the app version, and the kind of phone and system version. Never a screenshot or what was on the screen, anything you wrote, your email, your name or your account. You can turn this off any time in Settings, Privacy (Send crash reports).

Notifications, calendar and health

Reminders are scheduled on your phone. Daytoward asks for notification permission only after your first step. If you connect your phone's calendar, step sessions are added to it and, only if you turn on suggested times, Daytoward reads when you are busy (start and end times, never what your events are); this stays on your phone, except that with Plus, when you ask the coach to replan your week, the busy times of the days being planned (for example "Friday 18:00–20:00") are sent with that request. If you connect Apple Health or Health Connect, Daytoward reads your workouts (type, time, length and distance) on your phone to offer one for a fitness step; nothing is written, nothing medical is read, and workouts are not uploaded or kept — only whether you counted one.

Service providers

Supabase (database, sign-in, our server functions; United States), Apple and Google (if you choose to sign in with them), Anthropic (AI; United States), Google Cloud Text-to-Speech (letter voices, only if you choose one), Resend (emails; United States), Cloudflare (our website, which also serves the book covers shown in the app, so the app never contacts the publishers' or Open Library's servers), RevenueCat (United States) and Apple or Google (subscriptions), PostHog (analytics, only with consent; United States), Sentry (crash reports, which you can turn off; stored in the European Union, in Germany), Expo (delivers buddy notifications through Apple's and Google's notification services). They process data only to provide their service to us.

Your choices

Children

Daytoward is for people 13 and over; under 18, with a parent's or guardian's permission. We do not knowingly collect data from children under 13. If you think a child under 13 has given us data, write to privacy@daytoward.com and we will delete it.

Where data is kept and for how long

On our servers in the United States (Supabase, AWS us-east-1) while you have an account; deleted when you delete your account. AI request counts are kept 90 days, then deleted every night. Email send records are deleted with your account.

Changes

We will tell you in the app before any change that affects how your data is used.
